Drunk Moogles, Tipsy Chocobos, Hammered Metroids and More.

The Drunken Moogle, maintained by Mitch Hutts and Travis Broyles, explores one very specific arena: the space where drinking and videogames meet. From Mitch's own description of the site, The Drunken Moogle is:
... a blog devoted to what might be the two best things this side of Hyrule: video games and booze. Though the generation of gamers who grew up with Mario, Sonic, and Final Fantasy gains new interests, some hobbies never change. We at TDM are dedicated to bringing the evolving gamer the perfect pairing between gaming and drinking culture.
While this is a noble endeavor on the whole and one which I endorse heartily, the true genius of The Drunken Moogle are the gaming-inspired cocktails which Mitch and Travis have compiled, if not concocted themselves. I have yet to apply my own not-insignificant barcrafting skills to any of the recipes below, but rest assured I will do so in due time and report back on the results.

THE BLANKATINI (Street Fighter)

Blankatini (Street Fighter Cocktail)

1.5 oz. green apple vodka
1 oz. melon liqueur

Directions: Pour both ingredients into a cocktail glass and stir. Line the rim of the glass with orange sugar or cotton candy and garnish with a lemon peel. Drink and try not to get electrocuted.

SCUMM BAR'S FINEST GROG (Secret of Monkey Island)

Scumm Bar’s Finest Grog (The Secret of Monkey Island Cocktail)

6 Light Wheat beers (I used Bud Light Wheat)
3 oz. dark rum (preferably Kraken Rum)
3 oz. white rum
1 oz. lime juice

Directions: Grog is meant to be served to a group of pirates, so get some friends for this one. Pour the six pack into a large enough pot or other container that can hold it. Add in the 6 oz. of rum and the lime juice. Stir all ingredients. Use a small serving cup to distribute ye grog.

Note: Grog was traditionally rum that was diluted with water or a weak beer, served hot or cold. It wasn’t the tastiest substance, so often ingredients such as sugar, cinnamon, or lime juice were added. While the grog that Guybrush encountered in The Secret of Monkey Island was a bit more deadly, this grog is sure to not melt through your mug. It will give you the kick a drink made for a pirate should, though.

1/2 shot lime vodka
1/4 shot lime juice
1/4 shot melon liqueur

1 shot lime vodka
1 shot lime juice
1 shot melon liqueur
1 shot sprite

1 Bulbasaur
1 Ivysaur
1 shot lime vodka
1 shot lime juice
1 shot sprite

Directions: For the Bulbasaur shot, simply mix all three ingredients into a shot glass. For the Ivysaur cocktail, shake all ingredients and pour over ice in a rocks glass. Add a stem of mint as a garnish. Finally, to evolve to the Venusaur cocktail, shake a Bulbasaur shot together with an Ivysaur cocktail, along with an additional shot of lime vodka, lime juice, and sprite, and pour over ice into a highball glass. Again, add a few leaves of mint as a garnish.

THE DASHING PRINCE (Katamari Damacy)

(recipe makes 6 shots)
1 oz Blue Curacao
1/2 oz Grenadine
2 oz Vodka
2 oz Midori Melon Liqueur
2 oz Pineapple juice
1 oz Fresh lemon juice
6 Maraschino cherries with stems

Directions: Mix the Blue Curacao and grenadine and divide into the bottom of 6 shot glasses. Pour vodka, Midori, pineapple juice, and lemon juice in a shaker and shake to combine. Carefully layer the green on top of the purple, and garnish the edge of each shot glass with a maraschino cherry.

To take the shot remove the cherry from the edge and down it, and then eat the cherry afterwards. The result is a shot that’s sweet, quirky, and even a little fruity that’s best enjoyed with all your friends, just like Katamari Damacy.

Guaranteed not to roll up your insides once ingested!

THE FAT MAN (Fallout 3)

3/4 shot Spiced Rum
1/4 shot Cinnamon Whiskey
1 shot Vanilla Vodka
6 shots Dr. Pepper

Directions: Pour the Dr. Pepper in a highball glass and mix in the shot of vanilla vodka. Pour the spiced rum and cinnamon whiskey into a shot glass. Make sure bystanders are out of blast radius and deploy the fat man (er, drop the shot into the highball glass). Consume and make sure to find some Rad Away, quick! Speaking of Rad Away, you might be able to find a homemade recipe on this site soon…

The Fat Man, mini-nuke. For when you just don’t have the time.

First Shot
2/3 shot Gold Tequila
1/3 shot Orange Juice

Second Shot
2/3 shot lime juice or Roses lime
1/3 shot Bol Blue

Directions: Take the first shot, immediately take the second shot.

“In laymen’s terms, speedy thing go in, speedy thing comes out.”

1/2 shot of Goldschlager Cinnamon Schnapps Liqueur
1/2 shot of Wild Turkey’s American Honey
1 Can of Ginger Ale

Directions: Shake the American Honey and Goldschlager and pour into an Irish coffee glass. Add the ginger ale until the glass is full and then stir to mix up the gold particles. Go to the race track, bet on your favorite chocobo, drink and profit.

With Final Fantasy XIII being released everywhere outside Japan this Tuesday, I thought it was time to make a Final Fantasy drink. The Goldschlager gives the drink a strong cinnamon taste and the gold flakes add a nice visual touch for a drink made in honor of the prized golden chocobo. Wild Turkey American Honey is a nice “smooth liqueur blended with pure honey and bourbon whiskey.” It’s quiet sweet but still has a nice bourbon flavor, great to drink alone if you have the chance. Mixed all together, the drink has a sweet bite and nice aftertaste. I hope you all will enjoy it while you play Final Fantasy XIII next week!

T-VIRUS (Resident Evil)

3/4 shot Silver Rum
1/4 shot Everclear
1 Blue Twizzler

Directions: Wind a blue Twizzler around a tall double shot glass. It should stick to the sides of the glass. Pour in the silver rum and top with the Everclear. Drink, then eat the Twizzler for a sweet and tangy aftertaste. You will have to fish out the Twizzler with your finger after you drink, as it will still be stuck to the side of the shot glass.

1/2 shot Bacardi Big Apple Rum
1/2 shot Coconut Rum
1/2 glass Kiwi Strawberry Minute Maid (or Kool-Aid)
A little less than 1/2 a glass Sprite
3 Strawberries

Directions: Shake the two rums and Kiwi Strawberry Minute Maid and pour into a lowball glass. Add the Sprite for a bit of flavor and carbonation. Drop in three strawberries as a garnish. If you choose, you can use your ice beam freezer to cool the alcohol before you make the drink.

Cheap Beer

Directions: This is more of a fun joke to pull on someone than an actual drink. Start getting a Martini glass. Put some Fancy garnish on it. Get a cheap beer from the fridge. Pour it into the fancy-made glass while the customer sees it and serve. Tell the customer that of course there is beer in it, as the drink was a lie.
