Double Triptych: Retro, Imaginary Games for Movies and TV Shows

"Flight of the Conchords: Season 2" by Max Atom
(Full game download here!)

"Scruffy For Atari" by Ron Workman

"A Game of Ice & Fire II" (t-shirt) by Drew Wise

"Inception" by Penney Design

"Hunger Retro Game" by Drew Wise

"ConfederVania II: Abraham's Quest" by Timothy Lim

Sorry for the unwieldy title, but I'm working with a pretty specific theme today: box art for imaginary games based on contemporary movies and TV shows, if they were made for the NES or Atari 2600.

These have been piling up for a while, which is why there are two entries from Drew Wise in the mix. The Flight of the Conchords game seen above is NOT imaginary, as someone has elected to make an entire 8-bit game based on the adventure of Bret and Jemaine. And that last entry is, of course, inspired by Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Also, I would play all of these games. In fact, I'm playing one of them right now.

Double Triptych: Journey Men

"A Journey To Beauty" by RyuuKiba

"Journey" by SiOtheCaveman

"Journey" by Leonardo Gutierrez

"Journey" by Michael Bills

"Sandstorm" by Rebecca Gunter

"Journey" by Luisa Rafidi

Journey is a game that I've been wanting to play for a while, but haven't been able to get ahold of a PS3 to do so since it was released back in March. Nevertheless, the game looks beautiful, and it's already starting to inspire some pretty stunning fan-art.

Double Triptych: We Do What We Must Because We Can

"Queen of Portals" by Sodano

"Portal Minimalist Poster" by Blind-Pixel777

"Aperture Dalek" by The Dalek Factor

"Katamari Portalcy" by Brittany Langlois

"Portal 2: Minimalist Poster #4" by LMND Tree

"Cutaway Companion Cube", Artist Unknown

I'm not sure where that cutaway Companion Cube came from, or who made it. It might be official Valve artwork promoting the new Portal 2 DLC, "Perpetual Testing Initiative". Then again, it might not be. Your guess is as good as mine.

Double Triptych: Agro!

(Click for full-size)
"Little Nemo and the Tall Man" by Niko Geyer1

"Go, Wander, Go!" by Luiz Felipe2

(Click for full-size)
"My Little Colossus" by Blondeyetti3

"Shadow of the Patapon" by Vitor Caneco4

"SOTC" by Maitaboris

"Shadow of the Munny" by Matthew Ellison5

1 Who doesn't love Little Nemo? The pairing of Nemo and a Colossus is genius, for the record.
2 A Shadow of the Colossus\Mother 3 mashup. Nothing more to say except I like how well this captures the tone and spirit of both games. And the querying "Is there a bug on me?" question mark over the Colossus' head.
3 I am not a brony. I honestly do not get that weird little niche subculture of 20- and 30-year-old dudes who are really into MLP:FIM. That said, I thought this pony Colossus was some fine work, from the mossy patches to the glowing section on the rump.
4 I've never actually played Patapon, but this looks about right.
5 I've been getting back into vinyl custom figures lately and I came across this in my internet travels. Very nice work.

Double Triptych: White & Nerdy

"White and Nerdy (Black)" by DKNG Studios

"Smells Like Nirvana" by Dave Perillo

"Than Thou Art" by Adam Hanson

"Spatula City" by Gimetzco

"Another One Rides The Bus" by Joshua Budich

"Weird Alvolution" by Miranda Dressler

With the exception of Spatula City, these were all featured in Gallery1988's "Is This Thing On? 2" comedy retrospective exhibit. Check out the link for more.

ps. How great is Weird Al? That man is a stone-cold genius. Future historians will look back on him as one of the most important artists of the era. Mark my words!
